Thursday, July 15, 2021: And the Word of the Day is…

Proofreading isn’t just about the obvious mistakes, like an “a” that should be “an” or a “there” that should be “their.” Sometimes you have to be paying enough attention to notice a more tricky error – and then use context and/or practice at knowing how Cypriots are likely to mispronounce things, like here:

Take advantage of our wide gamma of products.

While gamma is a word (and, coincidentally, the third letter of the Greek alphabet), it wasn’t the one she was after. The correction was later discussed and the right word became our Word of the Day because it’s one that is seriously underused!

The right word was “gamut”, defined as “the complete range or scope of something.”
