Wednesday, June 9, 2021: Setting a Good Example

There are several dangers associated with the pressure of being hired as a pillar of good English skills.

For example, you can spend far too long trying to work out the perfect word to replace a wrong one. I mean upwards of an hour. I even went as far as asking what word the other content writer would use. (Even worse? In the end, the sentence in question ended up being removed from the text.)

When your nemesis is in a certain mood, you have to be very careful that every instant message has perfect grammar and spelling, or else she will pick up on it. In general, there’s an understanding that the level of English you use in the office is much higher than the level used at home. You use actual words, for one.

And then, when your genuine reaction to a nice piece of work by a designer is “oooh, it spins”, you have to send that in a private chat to get it out of your system before sending the more appropriate “I really like it!” publicly.

When abroad, I speak English very clearly, slowly and without using slang. At home I just let it flow like dirty laundry
